Carbon pricing as a practical decision-making tool

The made-to-order staircase manufacturer built sustainability in from day one, set an internal carbon price and now uses it as a live input to operational decisions.

100% made-to-order

Stepsta sells made-to-measure indoor staircases to customers across the Nordics and Germany, with around SEK 22m in revenue last year and a target of roughly SEK 30m in 2026. The founders came from e-commerce and set out to bring modern digital experiences to a traditional industry - every staircase is designed, priced and ordered online, then manufactured to the customer's exact specifications with no inventory.

Climate action, built into the business from the start

For Stepsta, sustainability was never something to bolt on later. From day one the company decided to take responsibility for its footprint and build the cost into its business model - assigning an economic value to climate impact.

We wanted to put a cost on our carbon emissions. If a more sustainable alternative costs less than the cost associated with those emissions, it becomes much easier to make the right decision.

How Stepsta builds its climate budget

Stepsta maintains a climate budget tied to staircases sold. The budget is then invested in carbon credits selected for overall impact and clear relevance to the business. The process runs like this:

  • Estimate the climate footprint of each staircase, from design to delivery.
  • Apply an internal carbon price to that footprint.
  • Use the resulting cost to guide operational decisions and pick lower-emission alternatives.
  • Allocate a portion of revenue from every staircase sold to a climate budget.
  • Invest the budget in external climate projects with the greatest overall impact.

The budget grows with the business - more staircases sold, larger associated footprint, larger budget for climate and nature projects. Sustainability scales as the company scales.

From CO₂ tonnes to broader environmental value

Working with Atmoz, the focus shifted from pure cost-per-tonne to overall impact, including biodiversity and wider environmental values. Boreal Mix, a forest conservation project in northern Sweden, became a natural fit: Stepsta's products are built around wood, the founders have roots in the north, and the project protects high-conservation-value forest while keeping carbon stored on the landscape.

Starting before everything is perfect

A common thread is willingness to start. Rather than waiting for a perfect model, Stepsta began with simple assumptions covering production, transport and overhead, then improved as the business grew. Climate work isn't primarily a sales lever - it's about the kind of company Stepsta wants to be, and it has become a natural part of culture, decision-making and brand.
