Turning CO2 into building material

The Leeds Carbon Mineralization project by O.C.O Technology Limited converts CO2 emissions into solid building materials using Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT). The facility treats waste materials by reacting CO2 with alkali earth hydroxides and silicates to produce lightweight carbonated aggregate for construction.

This aggregate meets EN13242 and EN13055 standards and contains 144 kg of CO2 per tonne, making it a high-quality, sustainable material.

What is carbon mineralization?

Carbon mineralization is a natural and engineered process that captures and permanently stores carbon dioxide by converting it into stable, solid minerals. The reaction occurs when CO2 interacts with minerals such as calcium and magnesium silicates or hydroxides, forming carbonates like limestone or magnesite.

In nature this process happens over thousands of years as rocks weather and absorb atmospheric CO2. Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) speeds up the reaction so CO2 can be captured and stored in hours or days, transforming industrial waste and CO2 emissions into valuable materials.
