The Karnataka Solar climate offset project harnesses all of India’s sunshine hours and converts them into electricity that feeds into the Indian grid. The project thus contributes to both fossil-free solar energy and provides socio-economic benefits to the region’s residents.

Karnataka is India’s eighth largest state in terms of population and has a rich wildlife. It is home to 25% of India’s elephants and 10% of India’s tigers. Karnataka depends on the annual monsoon rains between June and September, when rainfall ranges between 50 – 350 cm. Since the state is expected to experience a warming of about 2.0 °C by 2030, the monsoon is expected to provide significantly less rainfall, which will have a major impact on both people and animals. Agriculture in Karnataka is dependent on rain, which makes it very vulnerable to changes in the monsoon. The Karnataka Solar project prevents the emission of about 425,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually. By replacing dirty coal power, the project contributes to reducing climate impact.
The Karnataka Solar project produces close to 500,000 MWh of clean, renewable energy annually, equivalent to powering over 575,000 Indian households each year.

In addition to the climate and environmental benefits that solar energy brings, there are also economic and social benefits. Over 30 secure jobs with health insurance and pensions have been created and the general infrastructure in the area has been improved.
