Skyltmax is one of Europe’s largest sign manufacturers, having sold over 8 million signs to businesses and private customers in 120 countries.
The company is committed to being as carbon neutral as possible – meaning they aim to reduce as many emissions as possible from their own operations and offset the rest, including those from suppliers and other areas outside their control. This is an ambitious goal that requires careful measurement and strategy.
Additionally, with mandatory carbon reporting taking effect over the next few years, Skyltmax wanted to ensure they would be able to supply their B2B customers with complete and accurate emissions data.
The Challenge: Manual carbon calculations required a lot of resources and were overly time-consuming
To measure their total carbon footprint, Skyltmax had to go through every invoice to write down items and activities, from the purchase of headphones to glasses. These would then be transferred to an Excel sheet with thousands of other items.
This was a labour-intensive and time-consuming process that prevented teams from focusing on more important work.
Unwilling to break their climate commitment, Skyltmax knew they needed an easier and more efficient way to track emissions – without losing accuracy.
The Solution: Switching to an automated, spend-based approach
Spend-based calculations are based on financial data. Companies can quickly measure emissions by taking the value of a purchased good or service and multiplying it by the relevant emission factor.
Atmoz uses this method, pulling financial data from accounting software to automate calculations. After Fortnox – Skyltmax’s accounting system – announced its integration with Atmoz, the team saw an opportunity to trial this more efficient process.

“We got an invite from Atmoz, got connected, and chose which parts of the accounting data we wanted to allow Atmoz to extract. I then filled in per account what would go to spend via this connection and what we would include more manually.”
Using Atmoz meant Skyltmax could get even more detailed in their carbon calculations, measuring emissions from the manufacturing of each material and sign, transport of materials and products – even emissions from the commutes of each of their 80 employees.
Best of all? They wouldn’t need to waste a second on data entry.
“Getting all of this on spend data feels very smooth as an idea overall – and it works just as smoothly in practice. The emissions factors in the Atmoz tool may be standardised. but because they are carefully calculated and produced by experienced analysts, they still represent a reliable average of reality. This means the accuracy of the calculations can still be maintained.”
For certain items, Skyltmax has chosen to take a more manual approach and not use spend-based calculations. This gives them a high degree of control over these areas and enables them to adapt their climate calculations to their specific goals while letting Atmoz handle the rest.
Apart from calculations, Skyltmax have also used the Atmoz platform to see where they can focus their carbon reduction efforts and offset any remaining emissions to reach their ambitious carbon reduction goal.
From Atmoz’ curated list of Gold Standard projects, the company has chosen to contribute to the Bhadla Solar Power Plant, which generates clean electricity in India through solar energy as a renewable energy source.

Atmoz has helped Skyltmax free up more time and resources for the things that matter. Hours that were once spent on tedious data collection can now be spent on carbon management work that makes a difference – or on delivering exceptional quality signs and further growing the company.
