The B Corp movement is evolving. In April 2025, B Lab will launch a new set of B Corp certification standards that introduce a more rigorous, structured framework. These changes will affect how companies achieve and maintain B Corp status, with a particular emphasis on climate responsibility and carbon emissions management. What’schanging in the B Corp Standards?

Previously, companies seeking B Corp certification needed to achieve a minimum of 80 points on the B Impact Assessment, allowing flexibility in how they demonstrated impact. Under the new model, flexibility gives way to fixed requirements. Companies will need to meet a set of baseline Foundational Requirements and satisfy specific criteria across a new structure of Impact Topics.

Foundational Requirements include legal accountability, operational transparency, and ethical compliance. Once these are met, companies must demonstrate performance across several Impact Topics such as Fair Work, Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and Climate Action.

Focus on climate action: What businesses need to know

Among the new Impact Topics, Climate Action takes center stage. Every company pursuing B Corp certification will be required to:

• Measure Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions annually - This includes Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, covering both direct and value chain-related emissions.

• Set a Science-Based Emissions Reduction Target - Targets must align with the goal of limiting global warming to below 1.5°C.

• Implement a climate transition plan - A concrete plan outlining how the business will reduce its emissions and meet its climate goals.

Additionally, companies must use the GHG Protocol for emissions accounting and ensure third-party verification of their emissions data.

Timeline for implementation

The updated standards will be published in April 2025. Companies will begin certification under the new framework starting in 2026. While existing B Corps will have a transition period, all companies should begin preparing now to align with the upcoming expectations.
