Sustainability as a natural part of the business
LIWLIG is the largest event and brand experience agency in the Nordics, with operations in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and the United Kingdom. In Sweden, the company consists of four leading event and communications agencies that came together in 2024 to form a stronger, unified organisation.
Through hundreds of events every year, LIWLIG helps companies create meetings and experiences that strengthen brands, engage employees and support business objectives. At the same time, event production generates a carbon footprint that must be addressed.
Sustainability has long been an integral part of LIWLIG’s operations. Around 2015, the company began working more systematically with climate and sustainability issues. When the Swedish agencies merged, each organisation already had established sustainability practices in place, allowing experience, processes and ways of working to be combined and further developed.
Focusing on reducing emissions at source
LIWLIG’s sustainability strategy is based on a simple principle: first avoid and minimise emissions, then address those that cannot be avoided.
The largest sources of emissions in event production are typically transport, food and beverages, energy use, materials and waste. To reduce its impact, LIWLIG actively promotes sustainable choices throughout the entire project lifecycle. Through its internal LIWLIG Responsibility Guide, project teams receive support in identifying the most effective measures for each event and making more sustainable decisions from the planning stage onwards.
The company also sets sustainability requirements for suppliers through its Supplier Code of Conduct and certifies selected projects in accordance with the Greentime standard for sustainable events, ensuring high sustainability standards throughout the supply chain.
The climate impact of an event is estimated before it takes place and then followed up through carbon calculations once the project has been completed.
Carbon measurement helps us understand where emissions occur and which actions make the greatest difference. It is by reducing emissions within our projects that we can create meaningful impact over time, says Anna Pesula, Sustainability Director at LIWLIG.
Climate finance for remaining emissions
Despite a structured approach to reducing climate impact, it is not possible to eliminate all emissions associated with event production. For this reason, LIWLIG offers clients the opportunity to provide climate finance for the emissions that remain after reduction measures have been implemented.
Following each project, clients receive a report detailing the event’s carbon footprint and can choose to finance the remaining emissions through LIWLIG, do so independently, or opt not to participate. For many clients, this has become a natural part of their sustainability efforts around events.
Many larger companies now request carbon calculations during the procurement process and expect transparency regarding both emissions and the measures taken to reduce them.
From global climate projects to local climate impact
When reviewing its climate finance portfolio, LIWLIG wanted to identify initiatives with a stronger Nordic connection and climate benefits that are easier to understand, communicate and monitor.
Together with Atmoz, LIWLIG therefore expanded its climate project portfolio with a stronger focus on the Nordic region. The portfolio combines two types of climate solutions: projects that prevent future emissions and nature-based projects that enhance ecosystems’ ability to store carbon over time.
One of the projects is EcoUp in Finland, which produces insulation materials from recycled paper and cardboard collected from households and industry. By replacing conventional insulation materials with significantly higher carbon footprints, emissions are reduced by an average of 75%.
EcoUp also represents the type of solution LIWLIG aims to support: projects that combine climate benefits with circular economy principles. Once the insulation material reaches the end of its useful life, it can be reused, recovered for energy, or used as a soil improvement product, creating additional value from resources that would otherwise become waste.
The portfolio also includes Boreal Mix in Sweden – one of the few initiatives focused on protecting old-growth forests with high conservation value from logging. While climate action is often the primary focus, the project simultaneously addresses the rapidly growing loss of biodiversity.
Through financial compensation to landowners, the project enables the long-term conservation of valuable forest areas that might otherwise be commercially harvested. The initiative is carried out in dialogue with Sámi stakeholders to ensure consideration for reindeer grazing lands and migration routes, while preserving the ecological value of the forests.

Atmoz helped us develop a portfolio of climate projects guided by climate impact, biodiversity and local relevance. For us, the most important thing was finding projects that feel relevant and closely connected to our business, and Atmoz proved to be an excellent partner, says Anna Pesula
The new portfolio makes it easier for both clients and employees to understand the tangible difference that climate finance can make. At the same time, it creates a stronger connection between LIWLIG’s Nordic operations and the climate and nature values that the projects help to protect and enhance.
