Samsun Avdan Waste Management, a project that captures methane from landfills and converts it into renewable energy, supplying clean power to the local grid while preventing one of the most potent greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
Methane has about 80 times the warming impact of CO₂ over 20 years (IPCC AR6), and because it only persists in the atmosphere for about a decade, reducing methane is one of the fastest ways to slow near-term warming. Projects like Samsun Avdan’s show how targeted avoidance initiatives can deliver immediate, measurable climate benefits, complementing long-term solutions.
The Samsun Landfill Gas to Energy Project in Samsun, Turkey, is a large-scale initiative designed to mitigate climate impact by capturing methane emissions from municipal solid waste and converting them into renewable electricity with an installed capacity of 3.4 MWe. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is collected through a comprehensive landfill gas (LGF) capture system and combusted to generate up to 54,600 MWh of clean energy annually, displacing fossil fuel-based power on the national grid.
Over a 28-year operational lifetime, the project is expected to avoid more than 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the initiative supports local job creation, employing 20 to 25 people with regular workplace safety and capacity building training aligned with international labor standards. Rigorous monitoring and verification frameworks are employed, including methodologies CM000A and CM0002 and Gold Standard certification, ensuring accurate measurement of methane capture, emission reductions, and electricity generation.
The project also aligns with and advances multiple united nations Sustainable Development Goals, notably SDG 7 (affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate action). It enhances local air Fuality, reduces explosion and odor risks, preserves soil through waste terracing and capping, and maintains ecosystem integrity without impacting food security, animal welfare, or critical habitats.
Comprehensive environmental and social safeguards, combined with transparent governance and community engagement mechanisms, underpin the projects credibility and contribution to Turkeys sustainable development and the global transition to cleaner energy systems.
