The Leeds Carbon Mineralization project by O.C.O Technology Limited converts CO₂ emissions into solid building materials using Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT). The facility treats waste materials by reacting CO₂ with alkali earth hydroxides and silicates to produce lightweight carbonated aggregate for construction. This aggregate meets EN13242 and EN13055 standards and contains 144 kg of CO₂ per tonne, making it a high-quality, sustainable material.

Puro.earth certified carbon mineralization

The project follows strict environmental compliance under the Puro Standard General Rules and Carbonated Building Material Methodology. By capturing and utilizing CO₂, the Leeds facility helps reduce carbon footprints in the construction industry and supports the transition to more sustainable building solutions.

What is carbon capture

Carbon mineralization is a natural and engineered process that captures and permanently stores carbon dioxide (CO₂) by converting it into stable, solid minerals. This reaction occurs when CO₂ interacts with certain minerals, such as calcium and magnesium silicates or hydroxides, forming carbonates like limestone or magnesite. In nature, this process happens over thousands of years as rocks weather and absorb atmospheric CO₂. However, scientists and industries have developed Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) to speed up this reaction, allowing CO₂ to be captured and stored in a matter of hours or days. This method is used in carbon capture and utilization (CCU) projects, transforming industrial waste and CO₂ emissions into valuable materials like carbonated aggregates for construction. Carbon mineralization offers a permanent and safe way to reduce atmospheric CO₂, as the resulting carbonates are stable and do not re-release CO₂ over time. It also supports the circular economy by converting waste products into sustainable building materials, reducing reliance on virgin resources. As industries seek innovative climate solutions, carbon mineralization stands out as a promising tool for carbon removal and sustainable construction.
